"Skam brings up serious themes like sexual abuse, eating disorders, beauty tyranny, discrimination, xenophobia, sexuality, drugs/alcohol and gender equality in a realistic and open setting, giving the outside world the opportunity to put the issues on the agenda", says the secretery Grete Herlofson,
"The Fredrikke prize which is the Norwegian Women’s Public Health Association honorary prize is this year given to Julie Andem and Skam’s actors.
The series title and theme brings up damaging myths and shows how individuals experience condemnation. The series reaches youth and adults, and allows for conversation and reflection on serious subjects intergenerational", explains Grete Herlofson.

"We are very happy and grateful to receive such an award.
The Norwegian Women’s Public Health Association is making a big effort for children and young people in Norway and internationally.
That such a traditional organization see the value of putting the focus on the reality of today’s young peoples lifes is inspiring and honorable", says producer Furevold-Boland.

Fredrikke prize consists of a statuette of the Norwegian Women’s Public Health Association founder Fredrikke Marie Qvam, a diploma and NOK 100,000.
The money is not for personal use, but will be used for a purpose within the Norwegian Women’s Public Health Association’s work.

The Skam gang has decided to give the prize money of 100.000 NOK to the girl project “Sisterhood.”
The project is for girls between 13 to 21 years old living in Oslo area and is being held in several neighborhoods and resource centers in Oslo Red Cross.
Here girls meet to discuss everything from friendship to love, sex and dreams for the future. Or just to be themselves as it says on the organization’s website.
Past winners of Fredrikke Prize includes Gunhild Stordalen, Lene Marlin, Wassmo and Margreth Olin.

M: Tore, I’ve heard a rumour. About you helping the SKAM-gays to be gay enough?
T: Yes.
M: What? Do tell!
T: The thing is, Isak’s story is pretty similar to mine. Even though we are pretty different as people, I was a bit more flamboyant.. So I talked them through what you do feel, what you don’t feel and how you would not react in a situation like that. They are super.. very serious actors, they get into the material. They had lots of questions prepared , it was really nice. Incredibly nice boys. I also helped them a bit with thank you-messages from gay organisations, they’re of course like “thanks!”, because it’s not really their fight. But it’s still important what they do, so I said they have to take that part seriously as well.
M: Did you join them on set?
T: No, I never did that. They just did research with me, the two of them.
M: The two of them? Oh my.. how exciting!
T: Yes, very exciting!
M: *whispering* Didn’t you really want to sleep with Henrik Holm?
T: No, I didn’t..
M: He’s so handsome.
T: But they were very.. straight, in a way. I don’t really get any hints of flirting there! It was very professional. But it was very nice!
M: But what did they ask about? Did you just tell them, or did they interview you?
T: Yes, both! I just started talking, and I speak from the guts. It took some time, maybe especially with Tarjei, before he understood that it was OK to ask me questions about anything. So I thought, I should just…
M: But did they ask like, how is it to be fucked? (lmao i really didnt know how to translate “tatt i toern”= taken in the second?)
*laughter*
T: No! No questions like that! It was about that anxiety you get, how paranoid you get when you’ve had that thought “I’m gay”, and you’re on edge all the time, right? And you make up stuff in your head that’s not even close to anything..
M: That’s fucking terrible, I remember it so well. Me and my friends in primary school were watching porn, as we did when we were young, and they were just like “look at that girl!” and I realised I was only watching the guy..
T: Forgot that she was there at all.
M: Yes, and then I repressed it for a hundred years.
T: It was something that annoyed me about that series Øyevitne (yep, the norwegian original of Eyewitness*), where they are kissing, and then they can’t tell anyone that six people have been shot when they were watching, because they have kissed. And they are two boys who are on a rally cross track, like they probably were all the time. And that doesn’t add up for me, story wise. So it was so much fun to get to answer their questions.
M: But were you many- or just you?
T: No, it was the two of them, and a psychiatrist. Because they of course have someone to talk to for that as well, who they can ask about stuff. And he was going to play bipolar as well, and you have to learn about that from somewhere too.
M: That was so well acted, that bipolar thing.
T: Very nice. Really good actors.
M: Soo good! But did you know that he was bipolar? Did you get to know stuff about the series?
T: No, only what was relevant at the time.
M: So it was during the filming?
T: Yes.
M: Oh my god, how was it for you to watch SKAM then? I would have gone crazy with pride!
T: So much fun. And they played it so beautifully. I talked about that intensity with the first kiss and stuff, which I feel is so all-consuming. And that’s maybe the most beautiful moment too, when they’re laying with their heads opposite ways and kissing each other. That’s so beautiful.
M: Aahh, now I miss Isak and Even! So you talked about that- Oh my god, that’s crazy, that you’ve told them how to react and stuff. Because it’s so enormously well acted!
T: Yeah, it’s really nice. And I think the most important thing is to say what they should not do.
M: What did you say they shouldn’t do then?
T: That when you have a secret like that, you don’t get cocky. All that hetero stuff, you need to get rid of that.
M: But Isak was a bit cocky, with that when he kinda hated gays and..?
T: But that was in his safe environment, in his room with a friend.
M: Yeah, true.. A defence mechanism.
T: But a bit more how things are outside. So it was very cool, so much fun, to get to work with such talented people, that’s so much fun. I feel very honoured.
M: So you were at NRK talking then??
T: Yes.
M: I think this is insanely fascinating. If I were to make your CV now, I would put this first!

When I understood that SKAM was going to address young homosexuality in season 3, I called the entertainment department at NRK and said ”you can’t do this without me” I know this group of people well, and I find that media often has a tendency of portraying gay people in a corny and stereotypical way, we don’t deserve it.

The answer I got was: ”Cool. When can we meet?” (and was invited to talk to the creator Julie Andem.) In these conversation I came with contributions to which difficult emotions young people experience in connection to coming out. And the doubt about what and who you are, the sadness, the angst, the disgust and the shame that may follow it.

Shame was especially important for me to talk to [Julie Andem] about, because it often appears as an invisible, inaccessible and subconscious emotion. It may take a long time to identify that the discomfort you feel is shame, and I wished them to portray this in believable way.

I would say the scene where Isak comes out to Eskild is especially important. Here Isak experience a double form of shame - he is ashamed of being gay, and he is ashamed because he inflicts more shame on Eskild and other gay people. It’s important to specify that the shame he feels because he’s gay is painful and damaging, but the shame he feels because he infringes Eskild is right, healthy and with potential for development. It isn’t a goal to be shameless. because then we aren’t good people.

SKAM has managed to create debate, be informative and be educational with scenes like the one mentioned earlier. And especially the portrayal of the main character Isak - as an unique, but more “normal” gay boy, without the stereotypical traits media often show. I addressed this in my conversations with Andem. I presented experiences from many young gays, who doubt who they are, because they don’t have non-stereotypical role models. It’s important to present gay people as a group of people just as diverse as others. Media’s stereotype becomes a part of a simplification, that creates distance and alienates gay youth.

Good art and a good view on humanity, like SKAM portrays, is necessary for society to evolve, and it’s this openness that gives safety.
Ultimately it’s about how society reacts to humanistic values and human rights, and how it takes care of their minorities and their rights. SKAM contributes as a powerful voice in this important but vulnerable project.

«Sana» from Skam about her faith: – I felt different
Student and actress Iman Meskini is not afraid to display her religious beliefs.

– I do not want to argue with science, but I do think there is something greater behind it all!

Iman Meskini (19) is not like other students. Not only does she play Sana in the TV show Skam and basketball in the elite division for women; she also believes in God.

Only one in five students claim to believe in a god, as showed in a recent poll conducted by Sentio for Universitas. Iman studies Arabic and Middle Eastern studies in the University of Oslo, and recognizes that there are not many others like her.

– I am often asked «hello, how can you believe in a god, we live in 2016!» Norway is very secular, so those of us who believe are in a minority.

Still, she is not afraid to display her faith, and consciously uses her hijab.

– I want to use the hijab. Not only is it beautiful, it’s also an icebreaker. Wearing the hijab makes it easier to get in touch with people. It shows that I belong to a religion which believes in a god, and then people assume that is a topic that interests me. If they also believe in a god, we automatically have something in common, she says.

Learnt about Islam from her mother
She randomly stumbled upon her study of choice after graduating from high school. As someone with a father from Tunisia and a Norwegian mother who converted to Islam at the age of twenty, religion has always interested her.

– I feel lucky to have grown up as a believer. My own mother has taught me and my siblings a lot about Islam growing up. In school, we learned almost only about Christianity and Western values and culture, which is why I chose this line of study. The Middle East has a fantastic history, and we also learn a lot about Islam, she says.

Iman’s family still has a relaxed relationship with the religion, and she and her siblings got to choose whether they wanted to be Muslims or not by themselves. Iman stands by her choice, and visits a local mosque a couple of times a week.

– Our mosque is very diverse, with a lot of Muslims from countries all over the world. I learn a lot about Islam in the lectures there.

A modern kind of Islam
Iman is annoyed by how people do not separate culture from religion.

– It is very important to distinguish between these things. The fact that a lot of Muslims do a certain thing, does not mean that it has anything to do with Islam.

She thinks that the Quran encourages people to live as the prophet, without having to live just like he did.

– If that were the case, we’d have to ride around on camels. The Quran cannot be interpreted that literally, we must place it in a relevant context, Iman says before adding:

– Islam talks about balance. No one can be perfect. Your relationship to God is something between just you and God. Islam can be interpreted in different ways, and I am a very big fan of my mother’s interpretation. She is my role model. She tries to use examples from the Quran in a modern sense. Instead of trying to go back to the prophet’s time, we must place the Quran in a contemporary context.

Role model
Following her role in Skam, Iman has become a role model for many Muslim girls. She thinks that’s a good thing.

– It’s very cool, and it’s a lot of the reason why I took the role as Sana in Skam. My upbringing was quite like Sana’s. I grew up in Kolbotn, and I were one of few people who were Muslim or just not ethnically Norwegian. I still felt rather confident in myself, as I had my siblings and my mother who also wore a hijab. But I did experience how it is to feel different.

Iman thinks there are too few Muslim girls on TV wearing a hijab, and thinks it’s great that there is a role like that in Skam.

– And I think Sana is cool, but she is not me! She is a written character, after all. Recently I have received more comments on who I am as a person, and not just the role as Sana. Getting comments from young Muslim girls that I am a role model to them warms my heart.

– Religion can come back
Even though there are few students believing in god, professor Hallgeir Elstad still believes that religion can make a comeback.

– Culture used to be more permeated by Christianity and tradition, but you don’t get the same kind of «help» from culture today. The Western culture is getting more and more secularized, but Muslims and others are making their religion more visible. There is a lot of discussion today revolving around Islam, amongst other things.

The professor from the theological faculty is not surprised by the low number of religious students. He believes there are several factors explaining why «just» 22 percent of students believe in a god.

– It clearly depends on which subject you study, but traditionally people are more critical to religion and God in a scientific setting. The last few decades these tendencies have been enhanced, and we also discuss religion a lot in academia. It’s an expression for a clear, general culture of secularization in our culture, Elstad says.

The professor still believes religiosity has become more visible the last few years. A greater interest to discuss religion makes him believe in the comeback of religion.
